| HIP PICK OF THE WEEK: by j. lyon layden
There is no place to be on All Hallow's Eve more gothic, more wickedly psychedelic, than at the Velvet Elvis for GAM's annual Halloween show. GAM, in case you've only been in town for 30 seconds, is the best friggin' freak rock band in this sector of the universe. In this year's CL Reader's Poll, GAM won Best Theatrical Band, Best Punk/Funk Band, and Best Jazz Band. Never mind that they're not a jazz, funk, or punk band. Some people voted them Best Local Radio Station and Best Local Sports Team. Hell, some people just put 'em down for everything. I've heard of a few heretics who claim to be Savannahians while not being GAM fans. Few they are, but the typical nonbeliever's reason for this blasphemy is that they believe that the wild and imaginative stage show takes away from the music. These are usually the same people who'll sit through an entire evening of some earthy-crunchy jam band noodling incessantly in 4/4 time. All I know is GAM's album Phase 8 is the most original rock album released in the past five years, I'd trust Kevin Rose to play lead guitar on any song from any genre, Keith Kozel has the most stage presence in rock today, and Scott is the best rock drummer in Savannah. 'Nuff said. In GAM-related news, Superhorse (in which Joe Holman is not a member, Kevin Rose plays an ax and not a sax, Bobby Holman doesn't write music for Jones Communications, and Jim Reed and Bobby Holmen are getting along just fine, thank you) is hard at work at Elevated Basement Studios on five new songs for an upcoming release. |
