A pacifier just ain't enough.

So for all of you who have been bitchin' and moanin' for a new GAM record -- Ta-dah!

What promises to be the first great celebration of 1999 will be the release party for "Smell My Robot/Paper I & II," the new single -- on vinyl, natch -- from the rocking Savannah foursome.

"We went with a single to tide over people who were complaining," GAM guitarist Kevin Rose said.

Interesting phrase "to tide over people," since it holds the promise of greater things to come.

If you go
What: GAM CD-Single Release Party

Where: Velvet Elvis, 127 W. Congress St.

When: Saturday

And, in fact, the single, released by Damn Entertainment, out of Louisville, Ky., is from the band's upcoming and as-yet-untitled second full-length CD.

Recorded at Savannah's Elevated Basement Studio, the full CD will be finished within a few weeks and should be available on disc, tape and vinyl soon. No firm release date, just "soon."

Or as Rose says, grinning with noncommitment, "We're shooting for what would be called springtime."

"Smell My Robot/Paper 1& II," already available in local stores, is being distributed by Chicago's Hep Cat label and Red Eye out of Chapel Hill, N.C. The search for a nationwide distributor for the unnamed disc continues.

GAM -- lead vocalist Keith Kozel, lead guitarist Kevin Rose, bass man Mike Walker and drummer Scott Lankford -- has been frying up good music since they hatched on Easter Sunday 1991. Their first release was the two-song "Thunder Bomb" in 1995, and they followed that up with the more-than-full-length "Phase 8" in 1997.

In the nearly two years since "Phase 8," how has GAM changed?

"We've been messing around with a lot more electronics," Rose said. "I like to say we're different. We're evolving."

Saturday's party will also include a performance by Damn Entertainment recording artists Engine.

In other GAM news, the band will be featured in the coming months in the Mentos Mints on-line battle of the bands. Keep checking the web site and, when their name appears, vote for GAM at (www.mentos.com).
