GAM's single-release party Saturday at Velvet Elvis was something to hear (and see), with the local freaky-deaky rock-'n'-rollers putting on a show that is going to be hard to top in 1999.

Lead singer Keith Kozel was the center of attention, all glammed up as the offspring of Marilyn Manson and Ziggy Stardust, in a pair of black spaceman sunglasses and a black see-through shirt with sparkly cuffs.

We walked in in the middle of a rowdy "Superstar," which segued effortlessly into an equally rowdy "Damage." (Most song titles in this report are approximate.)

Then came the centerpiece, "Smell My Robot," the new single and perhaps the best song the band has ever pulled out of its spangled sleeve.

"This guy looks like he could break dance," Kozel said, pointing to one exuberant admirer. "You ought to come up here and bust some moves."

After an a capella verse of Sting's "Roxanne," Kozel doffed his memorable shirt and launched into another tune. He started faux fighting, with a fan (Kozel didn't miss a note), continued by doing the mosh pit thing (brave guy, considering that everybody was holding a drink and therefore had only one hand free) and ended by bringing forth a bottle of fake blood and pouring it all over his head, neck and chest.

We would've liked to stay longer, but the effect stirred up disturbing visions of Sissy Spacek in "Carrie" and we moved quickly to the nearest exit.
